| The Sanctuary is more than just a community blog or place for like-minded individuals to discuss the issues of concern for all those interested in migrant rights and the struggle for humane and practical immigration reform.
Our goal is to create an on-line community to share information, organize, engage in activism, and come together under one roof to unite in our efforts to effect change.
In order to do that, the information presented at the site needs to be organized and readily accessible to both members and those visiting looking for content.
With that in mind, we have a system of organizing site content to make it easier to find specific information.
Tags - "Tags" are the indexing system used to help organize the information at The Sanctuary. They allow not only members, but visitors, to look for specific content. They are keywords that identify the concepts and content of a diary.. . For example, if someone wanted to know about a specific piece of legislation, they could search the Tags for that bill's number ie: "HR4437", or name, ie; "Dream Act".
The diary author must choose at least one tag for the diary to be posted.
As far as the rules for tagging go, they are pretty straight forward: Keep it simple
1. Use at least one tag on every diary you write ( you can use as many as you want - the more options you provide- the better chance someone will find your diary)
2. Use full names for people ie: Barack Obama ...not Obama
3. Use Legislation Numbers when referring to bills
4. Use combinations of simple tags rather than inventing complex ones. For instance, use tags RAID, SWIFT and IOWA, instead of SWIFT-RAID-IOWA
5. Use commas between your tags. Not spaces, not periods, not semicolons
Subjects - In order to keep The Sanctuary organized and the information presented here easily accessible in addition to TAGS, we use a system of twenty Global Catagories called SUBJECTS to assign diaries searchable keywords. The list of SUBJECTS is available on the front page. When you post a diary you must choose ONE subject from the DIARY TOPIC box towards the bottom of the page that best describes the broad category your diary fits in:

Use this subject sparingly, it's intended to allow only the most important information to be readily available to the community ... please don't abuse it. Unless your action must be acted on within the next 24 hours please use the "Action Alert" subject
SUBJECTS should be viewed as The Sanctuary's "table of contents" found in the front of a book while the TAGS are similar to a complete "index" at the back. When used together they provided a very effective way of cataloging the content of the site.
Example of proper tagging: Diary about DREAM Act
SUBJECT: Legislation Federal
TAG: DREAM Act,S.2205
Tag should read: Legislation Federal, DREAM Act, S.2005
