Today The Hill is reporting that Repbulican Senators are using immigration wedge politics to try to poke holes in the new jobs legislation moving forward in Congress: The GOP expressed worries that the $15 billion jobs package crafted by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), does not go far enough to ensure that businesses don't use new-jobs tax credits in the bill to write off jobs given to illegal immigrants.

( - promoted by Manuel)
Last week, a conglomeration of anti-immigrant groups, led by “Help Save Maryland” and FAIR (recognized a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center), organized a rally against my organization, CASA de Maryland.
The heavily promoted rally, which was announced in CAPITAL LETTERS on the website of Help Save Maryland, was supposed to draw the anti-immigrant forces from around the state. Their website implored:
JOIN HELP SAVE MARYLAND, PEOPLE FOR CHANGE IN PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, FEDERATION FOR AMERICAN IMMIGRATION REFORM (FAIR) AND OTHER CITIZEN GROUPS!
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5, 12-1 PM, AT CASA OF MARYLAND'S LAWLESS DAY LABORER CENTER, 734 UNIVERSITY BLVD E (NEAR PINEY BRANCH RD), SILVER SPRING 20903.
LIVE COVERAGE OF OUR EVENT BY WFMD 930AM FREDERICK RADIO!
Don't let the threat of a few raindrops and snowflakes scare you off.
The Rally Against CASA of Maryland and Illegal Immigration in ON!
HSM Members are driving in from Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Baltimore City, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's, and Washington Counties.
Now, before I go on, it’s important to note that many political-types in Washington actually believe that the anti-immigrant forces are vast and numerous— not just noisy. Because of this, conventional wisdom on how immigration is hard to change. Well, for anyone in DC who missed how badly anti-immigrant candidates lost in 2008, please turn your attention to Maryland.

by Nezua, TMC MediaWire Blogger On May 30, 29-year-old Raul Flores and his 9-year-old daughter Brisenia Flores were shot to death, purportedly by a group of far-right anti-immigrant activists who broke into the Flores home by posing as police officers. On Friday, Shawna Forde, anti-immigrant activist and Executive Director of the Minutemen American Defense, (MAD) along with accomplices Jason Eugene Bush and Albert Robert Gaxiola were arrested on two counts of first-degree murder and burglary charges related to the Flores murders.

WHEN LUIS RAMIREZ WAS BEAT TO DEATH in the street for simply being Mexican While in Public, the Founding Editors of (award winning site!) The Sanctuary penned this piece. We did it carefully and over a few days, because we had a point we wanted to make very clear; one we did not see being underlined in the media. A point crucial to understanding the Ramirez killing as well as the killing of Marcelo Lucero and Wilter Sanchez and Jose Sucuhañay...and so many other vicious attitudes and assaults against the Latino comunidad.

THE FEBRUARY ICE RAIDS IN BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON surprised many, coming as they did after President Obama was elected. The remnant of Bush-Chertoff style tactics were a brand new shock again, as a mass of federal agents surrounded a car engine repair shop and scooped many workers into buses waiting in the back.
Shortly after, Janet Napolitano confessed that the raid had taken even her by surprise, that she was not consulted, and that she would order a review. Speaker Pelosi was soon quoted speaking out against the devastating effects our "enforcement" tactics have been having on communities.
Did the focus have an effect on how this raid played out in the aftermath?

FAIR (the Federation for American Immigration Reform), the Center for Immigration Studies and NumbersUSA. I have mentioned these anti-immigrant groups before - they purport to be "think tanks" or "grass roots orgs" and have a "common sense" approach to immigration policy, but are really espousing the type of hateful and inhumane immigration policies that have been responsible for the last 8 years of rising hate crimes and enforcement-only tactics. For more information, check out my previous posts on these groups:here, here and here. Click here to check out a video from America's Voice about these guys. Some have dubbed these guys the "anti-immigrant lobby", seeing as how they can turn every single issue in American politics into a soapbox for their xenophobic and radical anti-immigrant beliefs. Just recently they tried to deny immigrant children healthcare and burden businesses with mandatory use of the fatally flawed E-verify program. Last summer, they went as far as blaming immigrants for Global Warming. No, really. Well now, more than ever, these guys are being exposed for what they really are "wolves in sheep's clothing". last week, the New York Times featured an editorial on these extremists groups - here's an excerpt: The relentlessly harsh Republican campaign against immigrants has always hidden a streak of racialist extremism. Now after several high-water years, the Republican tide has gone out, leaving exposed the nativism of fringe right-wingers clinging to what they hope will be a wedge issue. Today, the Southern Povery Law Center released a report that proves undoubtedly just how extreme these groups really are. And America's Voice has built a website where people can take action to help stop the hate in the immigration debate. Click here to visit the site and vote on the "Top Anti-Immigrant Wolf in Sheep's Clothing". You can also download the full report from the SPLC. We know that organizations like the Center for Immigration Studies, Numbers USA, and the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) are not mainstream voices on immigration, but our politicians and media need to know it, too. Visit America's Voice to take action against the extreme in the mainstream.

A couple of days ago I received an e-mail from one of my blogmigas about an upcoming press conference hosted by the anti-immigration group, The Federation of American Immigration Reform (FAIR), to discuss "the implications of the recent elections and (their) agenda for immigration reform in the 111th Congress."
Figuring that it's always good to know what the opposition is up to, I decided to sign on to the conference call to get a feel for what strategies they were planning for the upcoming congressional session.
Little did I know that listening to the world according to FAIR President, Dan Stein, would be like falling down a rabbit hole where black is white and white is black.
Backed up by media spokesman, Ira Melman, and Executive director, Julie Kirchner, Stein managed in his 45min presentation to rewrite recent history, rehash long-discredited talking points, ignore or misinterpret reams of factual evidence, and flat out fabricate his own alternative reality.

Among the losers in this year's elections were the anti-immigrant lobby with their message of hate. Marginalized, they are now engaging in a full scale blood-bath of blame amongst their followers. But those of us who want progressive and humanitarian immigration policies cannot rest. We are hopeful that the incoming administration and the new Congress will undo the worst aspects of the Bush administration draconian anti-immigrant policies.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has published a piece, based on anti-immigrant crusader, John Tanton's correspondence, demonstrating his racist and anti-Semitic views. Herein, their post:
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan is an unassuming place, more like a small-town library than a research institute. But hidden away in 17 cardboard boxes deep inside the simple facility are the papers of John Tanton, the retired Michigan ophthalmologist who has been the most important figure in the modern American anti-immigration movement for three decades. The papers, which include more than 20 years of letters from the founder of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and a batch of other nativist groups, contain explosive material about Tanton’s beliefs. They also show that FAIR, where Tanton still serves as a member of the board, has been well aware of Tanton’s views and activities for years.

Check out this post and video on the "Hold Their Feet To The Fire" rally held in Washington by FAIR. The video goes in to the rhetoric of FAIR and McCain's loss of 'friends' on the anti-migrant side while solidifying the fact that anti-migrant groups love saying "we the people." I actually like that they call this the "Hold Their Feet To The Fire" rally because I see "the fire" as hell and FAIR (so obviously wrongly named) is asking us to promote Hell on Earth. A few days ago the Washington Post reported that Dobbs was promoting the hate group FAIR and participated at its "Hold Their Feet To The Fire." Now it seems he's enamored by a Aunt Jemima type characterization of Obama affixed to a fictitious brand of Waffles called "Obama Waffles." We know McCain just released a rather untruthful ad stating Obama was not for immigration reform. Is lying just in the Republican's DNA?

The ad in the leftist publication, The Nation, seems appropriate enough, a call to save our diminishing resources. The ad bemoans the destruction of "picturesque land into suburban sprawl." A huge bulldozer is shown ready to tear down pristine-looking forest land. Authoritative sources are cited, the Pew Hispanic Research Center and the Census Bureau. It ends with a dire warning: "300 Million People Today, 600 Million Tomorrow. Think About It."

As if we needed more evidence that John Tanton, founder of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and NumbersUSA, is a racist extremist, Peter Brimelow has put together an anthology of his favorite racist writers for the latest issue of Tanton's magazine The Social Contract. Eristic Ragemail has previously pointed out that the so-called grass-roots anti-immigrant organizations are in actuality a creature of a select cabal of extremist nutwings. If anybody had any doubt about Tanton's racist proclivities, this should put them to rest. (Peter Brimelow makes no bones of his racism, defending it as a bulwark against "political correctness.") John Tanton, founder of the Federation for American Immigration Reform and a dozen other nativist organizations, still proclaims agnosticism on the inferiority of non-whites, despite statements clearly belying such racism. The whole of the latest issue of The Social Contract exclusively features writings from the extremist website VDare with the unbowed racist, Steve Sailer featured prominently. Take this gem from a recent Sailer article, (one of a racist multitude) "there's a much simpler explanation for why white kids spend no more time on their homework than black and Hispanic kids, yet score vastly higher on achievement tests: because they are, ... smarter." Next time the media runs a quote from FAIR or NumbersUSA, invite them to peruse this issue of John Tanton's publication: The The Social Contract loves VDare and its stable of racists.
P.S. All this racist crap is paid for by you, the taxpayer. VDare is a so-called "non-profit" corporation.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform ('"FAIR") received a good deal of negative publicity after it was disclosed that it had received most of its start-up money from nonprofit Pioneer Fund foundation. The Pioneer Fund has a long history of promoting eugenics and giving funding to researchers who champion white supremacist causes. As well, the Pioneer Fund has provided money to a variety of anti-immigrant causes. The Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League have both condemned FAIR and the Pioneer Fund as promoting racist hate views. Most critically for the present discussion is the role of eugenics and immigration

One of our fellow bloggers, P.M. Corn, over at Mexico Trucker lost his granddaughter shortly after her birth. I want to express my condolences and provide the link to his post Taking a Break in honor of our Granddaughter. Drowning or Murder? at Dream Act Texas on allegations that the Moroccan Navy sank a boat full of migrants causing them to drown. Trading Oil for Immigration we learn that Chavez is threatening the E.U. on their immigration policies. And yesterday was World Refugee Day. John Tanton's Network of Hate: How A Small Group of the Wealthy founded the Contemporary Nativist Wave at Eristic Ragemail. Many of these so called think-tanks and other organizations often have money trails leading back to one or a few people. Contrary to Lou Dobbs, and other cable-TV hate-mongers, the current nativist wave is not an organic movement of Americans "fed up illegal immigration." The better part of the current nativist movement was orchestrated by a retired Michigan ophthalmologist by the name of John Tanton and a small group of wealthy donors. Starting in 1979.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform ("FAIR") continues to be treated by the mainstream media as if it were a legitimate and reliable source of information. Eristic Ragemail has previously posted articles where the media will quote FAIR without elaborating on its extremist elements and more importantly on its web of lies, distortion and outright fabrications. If one has the stomach to peruse FAIR's website, one will see a panoply of claims, all of which lack hard empirical proof or are outright fabrications of the nativist imagination.

It appears that the "grassroots" efforts that led to the controversial anti-immigrant ordinances in Prince William County Va. weren't so "grassroots" after all.
Apparently the folks at our favorite hate group, FAIR not only midwifed the legislation through it's birth ...they played a crucial role in it's conception.
This wouldn't be the first time that FAIR, or one of it's astroturf affiliate groups in the Tanton Network, anonymously penned some legislation for anti-immigrant politicians ... but this video gives us a clear picture of their behind-the-scenes actions on the local level to push an anti-immigrant agenda..

ORIGINALLY POSTED: 12/11/07
Today, two important events demonstrated just how far to the right the Republican Presidential candidates are shifting on the immigration issue. The first was the endorsement of Iowa front runner, Mike Huckabee, by Minutemen founder, Jim Gilchrist ... not so much for the fact that Gilchrist is once again trying to thrust his agenda center stage ... but rather Huckabee's willingness to embrace it.
On stage at an event in Council Bluffs with Gilchrist ,Huckabee characterized the anti-immigrant vigilante as "a person who just got fed up with what he saw as a breakdown of his own government....Since October of 2004 he's been one of the leading voices in this country trying to bring sanity to an issue that's spiraled.." adding:
"Frankly, Jim I've got to tell you there were times in the early days of the Minutemen I thought what are these guys doing, what are they about," Huckabee said. "I confess I owe you an apology." He said of Gilchrist, "nobody can question his commitment to his country."
Washington Post
The second event was an announcement by the leading civil rights watchdog group, The Southern Poverty Law Center, that the parent organization of the Washington think tank that's been credited with formulating Huckabee's new tough nine-point plan on immigration has been officially placed on their list of Hate Groups operating in the US.
