Update: Today,Media Matters launched its television ad calling on CNN to credibly address its Lou Dobbs problem. CNN has repeatedly allowed Dobbs to promote racially charged conspiracy theories about President Obama's birth certificate on his prime-time television show. You can watch the ad, set to air this week on major news networks, here. Sign their petition over at DobbsConspiracy.com.
Recently we reported on how CNN pundit Lou Dobbs was stirring up controversy over at "The Most Trusted Name in News" with the long-debunked claim that President Obama's birth certificate is fake. Here's the latest video roundup, in case you missed it:
Many organizations acted quickly to call out the conspiratorial claims. MoveOn.org demanded a public apology, the Southern Poverty Law Center called for CNN to take Dobbs off the air, and America's Voice sent a letter to CNN's president. As Greg Sargent reports:
The letter, from executive director Frank Sharry, is hard-hitting and worth quoting in full:
As America's Most Trusted Name in News, CNN has a responsibility to its viewers to provide commentary and analysis that is substantive and accurate. However, those promoting conspiracy theories about President Obama's citizenship, the threat of leprosy from immigrants and other falsehoods should be held accountable for spreading misinformation.
New York Times columnist Frank Rich weighed in over the weekend in Small Beer, Big Hangover:
One of the loudest birther enablers is not at Fox but CNN: Lou Dobbs, who was heretofore best known for trying to link immigrants, especially Hispanics, to civic havoc. Dobbs is one-stop shopping for the excesses of this seismic period of racial transition. And he is following a traditional, if toxic, American playbook. The escalating white fear of newly empowered ethnic groups and blacks is a naked replay of more than a century ago, when large waves of immigration and the northern migration
of emancipated blacks, coupled with a tumultuous modernization of the American work force, unleashed a similar storm of racial and nativist panic.

Cross-posted at America's Voice. No not really, but the Washington Post is reporting that Department of Homeland Security Head Michael Chertoff has had undocumented workers cleaning his home for over four years: Every few weeks for nearly four years, the Secret Service screened the IDs of employees for a Maryland cleaning company before they entered the house of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, the nation's top immigration official. The company's owner says the workers sailed through the checks -- although some of them turned out to be illegal immigrants.
Coupled with last week's announcement that a high-ranking New England Border Patrol official had undocumented workers cleaning her home, hypocrisy at DHS now seems to be the rule, rather than the exception. In "Chertoff hired company that used illegal workers," the Associated Press points out just how hypocritical the situation is: Speaking Oct. 23 on the state of immigration, Chertoff boasted about his department's record year for worksite enforcement cases - which led to more than 6,000 arrests. He also said, "We need to make sure our own house is in order," referring not to his own home, but to the federal government, which now is required to use a federal online database to check whether the workers are in the country legally.
This stunning piece of news is yet another piece of evidence pointing to our need for a change of direction at DHS and the passage of real, comprehensive immigration reform.

OK…let me get this straight:After two years of registering record numbers of Latinos and new American citizens, who are overwhelmingly supporting Democratic candidates like never before, and who hold the fate of several key swing states in their hands. After GOTV efforts are in place to bring this new voting block to the polls in record numbers come November 4th. After every demographic survey done in the last ten years points to the growing political power of Latinos, new immigrants, and those born during the current immigration wave from 1965 until the present of immigrant parents. After every poll done of this important demographic shows that the rabid anti-immigrant rhetoric of the Republican Party has driven this group into the arms of the Democrats NOW … YOU WANT TO TELL US THAT "THE WHOLE PATH TO CITIZENSHIP THING NEEDS TO BE SCRAPPED" IN THE SPIRIT OF "BIPARTISANSHIP" WTF IS THE POINT OF REPLACING BAD REPUBLICANS WITH SPINELESS DEMS, IF THE RESULTS ARE THE SAME? ENJOY THAT MAJORITY WHILE YOU CAN MS. PELOSI … I GUESS YOUR IDEA OF "CHANGE" IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF THOSE WHO VOTE TO PUT YOUR PARTY IN POWER. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday that Congress is unlikely to approve a tax rebate before President Bush leaves office, and she signaled that prospects are dim for a postelection session to pass an economic aid package.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Pelosi played down the chances that Democrats — increasingly confident of capturing the White House and building their House and Senate majorities substantially — could come to terms with Bush and vanquished congressional Republicans this fall on a plan to address Americans'
… Pelosi spoke in exuberant terms of capitalizing on a political "tide" gathering in favor of Democrats to beef up her majority. If a wave materializes to sweep out Republicans en masse, Democrats might not see a point in attempting to negotiate with Bush on an economic recovery measure when they have the chance, 11 weeks later, to do so with Barack Obama in the White House.
…Pelosi also said Congress would have to tackle the politically sticky job of overhauling immigration laws in the new Congress, after a bipartisan measure collapsed last year.
The estimated 12 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally "are part of the U.S. economy. We cannot send them all home, and we cannot send them all to jail, so we have to address it," Pelosi said.
Any solution would have to be bipartisan, she said, so it may require sacrificing some of Democrats' past priorities, such as giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.
"Maybe there never is a path to citizenship if you came here illegally," Pelosi said. "I would hope that there could be, but maybe there isn't."

My buddy Manny from Latino Politico is spending the weekend attending the New Organizing Institute (NOI) blogger conference in DC, and got to spend some time hobnobbing with some congressional staffers. Of course he managed to get some inside dirt on the SAVE Act fight... and it's good news so far
Check out his report HERE
As of yesterday the Republicans had managed to get 181 of the 218 signatures needed to force the SAVE Act to the floor.
Yet, it appears that the Democratic Caucus is holding and only 9 defectors have crossed over to sign the Republican "discharge petition"
(Ga.) - Rep. Barrow
(Ind.) - Rep. Ellsworth

(Kan.) - Rep. Boyda
(Miss.) - Rep. Taylor
(N.C.) - Rep. McIntyre
(N.C.) - Rep. Shuler
(Pa.) - Rep. Carney
(Texas) - Rep. Lampson

But ... Given that 49 Democrats originally signed on as sponsors for the bill, and 26 Republicans are still up for grabs, anti-immigrant forces are still within striking distance of getting this bill to the floor.
Groups like FAIR/NumbersUSA and their minions in the right-wing noise machine have ratcheted up the rhetoric and are engaging in a full-blown effort to move this bill forward.
Like in the last round of CIR legislation, they have engaged in a massive e-mail campaign to get out their followers. Once again they are offering free fax services and on-line tools to flood congressional offices with emails, letters, phone calls and faxes in support of the bill.
WE have neither the money nor resources to combat this on equal footing ...but we can do our best.
Contact your Representative today and tell them not to support the SAVE Act....and while you're at it...drop one of those 26 Republicans a line and let them know that you hope they continue to buck the machine and support them for doing so

Today the Republican leadership filed a "discharge petition" on the SAVE Act (Secure America through Verification and Enforcement Act) and have begun gathering the needed signatures to force the bill to the House floor for a vote.
A "discharge petition" is a special procedural motion that would allow the sponsors of the Shuler-Tancredo bill to take it straight to the floor of the House without having to go through the full committee process and then force a vote. 218 House members must sign the petition to allow it to go to the floor ...the bill currently has 139 sponsors, including a group of 48 vulnerable freshman and conservative blue-dog Democrats.
