Speak Out/Stop Hate Video Contest

by: kesquivel@nclr.org

Wed Aug 26, 2009 at 14:29:12 PM EDT

When we launched the Wave of Hope campaign to take the hate out of the immigration debate, there were only a couple of people speaking out along with us. Over the course of the last few months, however, multiple organizations and individuals have taken note of this issue and stepped up to combat hate. Although this is encouraging, attacks against Latinos are still occurring-there was one on August 14, 2009 in Long Island-and talking heads and politicians have yet to get the message.

Another Attack in Patchogue, New York

by: kesquivel@nclr.org

Wed Aug 19, 2009 at 11:20:01 AM EDT

Nine months after the brutal murder of Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue, New York, (which we chronicled here, here, and here) another attack is being reported from that same Long Island city.  The victim of last Friday's attack said that he was attacked on Division Avenue in Patchogue by three young White men who hit him, knocked him to the ground, and robbed him while making bigoted slurs.

Sadly, the nature of the attack bears striking similarities to the hate crime committed against Marcelo Lucero, who was attacked and killed in November of 2008 by several White teenagers while walking near the train station.

The Lucero incident led to a U.S. Department of Justice investigation on hate crimes in Long Island.  Authorities now say that the Lucero killing was a part of an anti-Latino crime spree that spans more than one year.

Keep the Nomination Process Civil, Respectful and Constructive

by: kesquivel@nclr.org

Wed Jun 24, 2009 at 16:12:49 PM EDT

Supreme Court nominations get political, even with nominees as qualified as Judge Sonia Sotomayor. However, that does not mean that politicians get a free pass to attack nominees solely on the basis of race, ethnicity or gender. Such outbursts are reprehensible not only to Hispanics and communities of color, but to all Americans. More than 4,000 people have stood up to the nonsense and signed NCLR's (National Council of La Raza) petition asking the Republican leadership to restore the debate on Judge Sotomayor's Supreme Court nomination to a more civil level of discourse.

http://capwiz.com/stopthehate/...

NCLR will be presenting the petition to Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). Please join us in asking these Republican leaders to denounce this smear campaign and keep the nomination process civil, respectful and constructive. If you haven't already done so, please sign NCLR's petition today. If you have, forward it on to your family and friends. Let's make sure that this petition has 5,000 supporters by the time it lands on Michael Steele's desk.

Reform Immigration for America Town Hall : Choreography and Criticisms

by: MamitaMala

Thu Jun 04, 2009 at 17:03:01 PM EDT

This morning at the Reform Immigration for America Summit, the attention was focused on Capital Hill and pumping up the activists for legislative visits via a National Town Hall Meeting on Immigrant Reform, held at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation.

The word that popped into my head as the packed church was lead in the "Si Se Puede" multiple language chant practice was "choreography". While the meeting featured a few grassroots, "real" people, the majority of the speakers were people we all have heard from already, including politicians. People in the audience did not participate, beyond chanting on cue. One of the included chants was "Workable Solutions" and there was something about this chant that didn't sit well with me. Workable meaning we stop pushing for inclusion of so-called divisive issues like detention reform, inclusion of glbt familias, and the DREAM Act?

I honestly missed alot of the first half of the Town Hall since I was entertaining a toddler. Pero here is what I was able to catch.

Notorious Anti-Immigrant and Racist to Run for Public Office

by: nezua

Thu Apr 23, 2009 at 15:28:33 PM EDT

OH THIS oughtta be grand! Chris Simcox, notorious racist and xenophobe and embezzler and all around embarrassment to the US has decided that he would best be able to fulfill his very interesting worldview were he to run for office.

PHOENIX - Minuteman founder Chris Simcox announced his bid for U.S. Senate against John McCain Wednesday, blaming the senator for deaths caused from violence on the Mexican border and promising a national campaign to unseat the four-term incumbent.

"We have the ability to run a national campaign as well as a state campaign," Simcox said outside the Arizona state Capitol. "There are millions of supporters around the country who have been waiting for some leadership in Washington to take on this border security issue."

Yeah....'cuz I seem to recall that politicans have done real well lately on these types of platforms.
