I didn’t attend last week’s Reform Immigration summit in Washington, DC but as I watched media about the event roll in, I began to wonder where I’d seen this all before. Over the weekend, it dawned on me: It’s “Horton Hears a Who” by Dr. Seuss writ large. “What?” you ask.

writing letters

In response especially to the Postville raid in May, some friends and I and members of our church congregation are writing to Congress to express our outrage and to ask for change. We are writing to our senators and representative and also to Obama and McCain.

I wrote the letter, a friend made photocopies and provided stamps, another printed address labels and provided envelopes. During lunch after the service today, we laid out letters and envelopes and people signed them. We got about 30 to 35 letters just today. We are a very small Latino congregation--small, but fierce, muy fuerte.

Framing the debate

For all who have opportunities to talk with the media about immigration issues, the following two articles by George Lakoff (author of Don't Think of an Elephant! and cofounder of the Rockridge Institute) will help a lot in framing the debate in a way that will enhance people's understanding of the complex issues involved.

"The Framing of Immigration," by George Lakoff and Sam Ferguson

But the real problem with the current situation runs broader and deeper. Consider the issue of Foreign Policy Reform, which focuses on two sub-issues:
* How has US foreign policy placed, or kept, in power oppressive governments which people are forced to flee?
* What role have international trade agreements had in creating or exacerbating people's urge to flee their homelands? If capital is going to freely cross borders, should people and labor be able to do so as well, going where globalization takes the jobs?
. . . Perhaps the problem might be better understood as a humanitarian crisis. Can the mass migration and displacement of people from their homelands at a rate of 800,000 people a year be understood as anything else?

MALDEF Launches Immigration Website

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) has launched a new website - Truth in Immigration. It is a welcomed addition to the efforts of human rights advocates that are fighting hard against the propaganda and demonization found extensively throughout the media.

Truth in Immigration's mission is to rebut legal and factual inaccuracies about immigrants and/or Latinos.
Anti-immigrant and anti-Latino stereotypes currently abound in the public arena. Political pundits, candidates for elected office, media networks, anti-immigrant organizations, and hate groups consistently disseminate negative myths about immigrants that poison the atmosphere for immigrants and all Americans.
Dehumanizing anti-immigrant stereotypes generate increased bigotry and violence that threatens the safety and well-being of everyone in the United States. Moreover, this hateful dialogue threatens to drown out reasonable and thoughtful perspectives on immigration reform and other key policy issues.
Therefore, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), has created Truth in Immigration (TII) to serve as a watchdog for communications about immigrants and to research, collect, and rebut legal and factual inaccuracies about immigrants that are disseminated and promoted in the media, the public messaging of anti-immigration organizations, and political campaigns.
