WHEN LUIS RAMIREZ WAS BEAT TO DEATH in the street for simply being Mexican While in Public, the Founding Editors of (award winning site!) The Sanctuary penned this piece. We did it carefully and over a few days, because we had a point we wanted to make very clear; one we did not see being underlined in the media. A point crucial to understanding the Ramirez killing as well as the killing of Marcelo Lucero and Wilter Sanchez and Jose Sucuhañay...and so many other vicious attitudes and assaults against the Latino comunidad.

I'M VERY SORRY TO SAY that Brisenia Flores and her father Raul are dead. That's her on the left. The Flores familia was sleeping when anti-immigrant crusaders busted down their door and invaded their home, ICE-style, before shooting the father and daughter to death.

OH THIS oughtta be grand! Chris Simcox, notorious racist and xenophobe and embezzler and all around embarrassment to the US has decided that he would best be able to fulfill his very interesting worldview were he to run for office.
PHOENIX - Minuteman founder Chris Simcox announced his bid for U.S. Senate against John McCain Wednesday, blaming the senator for deaths caused from violence on the Mexican border and promising a national campaign to unseat the four-term incumbent.
"We have the ability to run a national campaign as well as a state campaign," Simcox said outside the Arizona state Capitol. "There are millions of supporters around the country who have been waiting for some leadership in Washington to take on this border security issue."
Yeah....'cuz I seem to recall that politicans have done real well lately on these types of platforms.

Cross-posted at Citizen Orange.
I'm here in San Diego where Barack Obama just spoke at the annual National Council of La Raza (NCLR) conference. NCLR flew out me here and provided with me accommodations at the luxurious San Diego Marriot Hotel & Marina. I was given the opportunity after I helped publicize NCLR's latest We Can Stop the Hate video using Digg and StumbleUpon, among other new media tools. I didn't do it to advance myself in an particular way. I just thought the video provided the most succinct description of the link between leading "anti-illegal immigration" groups and white supremacy. I wanted as many people to see it as possible.
In fact, when NCLR invited me here, I did everything I could to get them to bring one of my blogmig@s along with me, or in my stead. I identify as white and there should be a latin@ blogger here covering this conference. I hear Todd Beeton of MyDD, and Lucas O'Connor of Calitics are here liveblogging Obama's speech, as well. They probably weren't hand picked by NCLR like I was, but if you don't see a problem with three white male bloggers covering a National Council of La Raza conference, I'll leave that for a post that I'll write when all of this is done. For now, we'll get back to Obama's appearance here.

The Minutemen see the removal of the National Guard from the border as "open season" for undocumented migrants. Therefore they're calling for more rogue bands of gun wielding extremists to join in the "pride" of protecting the border. Strangely I don't feel any safer. Breaking News! Minutemen Vigilantes Declare "Operation Open Season!" and Promptly 3 Mexicans are Shot on the Mexican Side of the Border! at Immigration Talk With A Mexican American. Does marriage determine level of assimilation? at DMI Blog. Lots has been said about assimilation and whether or not today’s immigrants are assimilating. A recent report published by the Manhattan Institute offers an inadequate approach to analyze the assimilation of the U.S. immigrant population. To discuss this further, I recently wrote an op-ed that was published by El Diario last Thursday. Abandoned two-year-old is the poster child for immigration debate at Latina Lista. With so much trauma and stress happening to these undocumented families, children witness it and internalize it. There's not much for them to be happy about in their young childhoods. If the case of Martin is true, some will no doubt pat themselves on the back for an immigration enforcement policy that seems to be working.

This weeks Web Site Pick is "Minutemen Unvarnished" a site sponsored by the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation's Border Project, which monitors day labor sites in San Diego County.
Minutemen Unvarnished tracks the activities of the San Diego Minutemen as they harass and threaten day laborers, employers, and Latinos in general, at various locations throughout the region. They video the minutemen in action and present them uncensored in all their racist glory.
The San Diego Minutemen (SDMM) and related groups are targeting day laborer hiring sites--and the laborers themselves--throughout San Diego County, chasing away potential employers in what they claim is simply a campaign to secure our borders.
SDMM's public line is that they stage protests at the sites to discourage the hiring of "illegal slave labor." However, among themselves, they make it clear that their target is Latino day laborers, period... legal or illegal.
In the videos presented here, SDMM members and supporters speak and act for themselves. You be the judge.

ORIGINALLY POSTED: 12/11/07
Today, two important events demonstrated just how far to the right the Republican Presidential candidates are shifting on the immigration issue. The first was the endorsement of Iowa front runner, Mike Huckabee, by Minutemen founder, Jim Gilchrist ... not so much for the fact that Gilchrist is once again trying to thrust his agenda center stage ... but rather Huckabee's willingness to embrace it.
On stage at an event in Council Bluffs with Gilchrist ,Huckabee characterized the anti-immigrant vigilante as "a person who just got fed up with what he saw as a breakdown of his own government....Since October of 2004 he's been one of the leading voices in this country trying to bring sanity to an issue that's spiraled.." adding:
"Frankly, Jim I've got to tell you there were times in the early days of the Minutemen I thought what are these guys doing, what are they about," Huckabee said. "I confess I owe you an apology." He said of Gilchrist, "nobody can question his commitment to his country."
Washington Post
The second event was an announcement by the leading civil rights watchdog group, The Southern Poverty Law Center, that the parent organization of the Washington think tank that's been credited with formulating Huckabee's new tough nine-point plan on immigration has been officially placed on their list of Hate Groups operating in the US.
